If you are not familiar with the hook-up of the timer to the standard power supply, it is easy to make a mistake.

Unplug everything

1) Plug the power supply cord in to a household power outlet. Be sure the switch on the front of the power supply is off.

2) Plug the 6-prong plug into the 6-prong socket on the back of the power supply

3) Now plug the power cord from the timer cord the socket on the upper back right of the power supply marked TO TIMER.

4) Get a short extension cord and plug it into the lamp outlet on
the timer.

5) Now attach the female socket of the extension cord to the male outlet on the upper left marked FROM TIMER,.

6) Now turn on the switch on the front of the power supply. The fan, which operates on 120 V, should go on.

7) Set an exposure time on the timer and punch the timer button.

If the lamp, socket, timer and power supply are all OK the ELC lamp will go on.

The power supply does not supply power for the fan or panel lamp. The 120V for the power supply comes out of the female socket on the back right, goes through the timer and to into the male plug on the upper left and to the transformer

Let me know how you do

For color printing you need a voltage stabilizer to provide a stable input voltage. Otherwise, normal voltage variations in the current supplied to your house, or whatever building you have the enlarger in, will cause variations in the color temperature of the lamp. That can make color adjustment through filter correction nearly impossible. It’s like a target shooter trying to hit a moving target that changes speed and direction randomly.

By using a voltage stabilizer, the voltage to the lamp can be held constant within plus or minus 2%. That’s generally close enough to ensure that the print-to-print color balance stays the same for consistent color enlarging.

A voltage stabilizer isn’t needed for black-and-white printing.

Like Harry said, those old Chromega heads with the dyed acetate filters are useless for anything other than B&W enlarging. They’re best used with the filters all set to zero and using below-the-lens variable-contrast filters such as the Ilford MG filter set that attaches to the lens with rubber-tipped thumbscrews. The replacement filters for the old Chromega heads were discontinued many years ago.
The 50mm lens was specifically designed to cover the 35mm image. There are several formats that can be made on 120 roll film. They are 645-6x6-6x7.

If you are going to do 645 and 6x6, a 75mm lens will cover it. But if you are going to do 6x7 you will need an 80mm lens.

I have all these lenses and matching negative carriers.

If you are interested in buying a lens and neg carrier, email me at my business address harry_g_taylor@sbcglobal.net for prices,

I also have copies of the C760 Instruction Manual.

Thanks for your perspective, IC! Having used the enlarger a couple of times now, I think I'm going to the factory spec bulb after all -- the brighter image will make composition and focus more pleasant. And your analysis of the problem reassures me that I won't be burning the foam.

As an aside, I recently picked up what appears to be a D5 focusing bellows on eBay -- slides right into the cone mounting slots. With this, I don't have to accumulate various cones for different lenses!

Anyway, thanks!

Hey Harry

THis is a follow up question to my other post on my frankenstein DiChro, but I split it into two questions so the subject line will be useful to the forum.

The inside of the head was filthy, so I disassembled from the left side, thoroughly cleaned the filter assembly and relubed. Works fine now.

But based on your experience, did I make a mistake with my materials?

The original lube appears to be graphite paste, which I normally have on hand for piano rebuilding (my other hobby from the World of Obsolete Technologies), so I used lithium grease I had on hand.

Also, I accidentally popped out the blue filter, and re-glued it with drops of hardware store Devcon epoxy at the original attachment points.

I know from rebuilding pianos and general tinkering that sometimes adhesives and lubes are critical to the application while at other times no big deal.

So my question is this: am I shooting myself in the foot here, or are these reasonable substitutions?

Again, thanks for maintaining this invaluable resource! (and if you already answered either of my questions before, I apologize for not finding it in the archive)

I have heard complaints of the Chromegatrol not being an accurate timer but, nothing like that.

They haven't been made for a long time and Omega no longer services them. But KHB Photografix in Canada still does.

Why don't you email Dave Ethrington at
       sales@khbphotografix.com
and ask him if that adjustment is something you can do. If it isn't, ask him if they can fix it and at what cost including shipping.

If it can't be fixed, you could replace it with another Chromegatrol or get a Standard Power Supply, Voltage Stabilizer and timer.
All of which I have in stock, if you can't get this one fixed.
